Child’s Bedroom - “Woodland Friends”

The child’s bedroom scheme was spurred on by the charming illustrations of children’s stories by Racy Helps, Molly Brett, and Beatrix Potter. I wanted to recreate their enchanting world of woodland creatures into the room concept.

I started with an earthy palette of mossy green, robin’s egg blue, and bark wood tones. The unusual angles of the child’s room ceiling helped create cozy nooks and crannies for tucking in artwork and furniture. The walls are painted Parrot Green from the Benjamin Moore Colonial Williamsburg collection and envelopes the room in a woodsy feel.

I wanted the space to elicit a sophistication that would age with the child or could be used alternatively as a guest room. Therefore, I chose timeless casegood pieces  and accessories. I also chose toys and children’s items that had a handcrafted or aged look to give the room a classic quality.  

The starting point for my design project was a whimsical Woodland Chorus fabric from Sanderson featuring spring robins, butterflies, oak trees, and hummingbirds and is used in the bedding and window treatment.  The quaint trim on the drapery panels is evocative of pinecones dangling from a tree, while the rustic wood drapery rod is a rich driftwood color reminiscent of tree bark.

The large bedroom is divided into two zones: a play area and a sleeping area. Given the woodland theme, local artisan Joe Sheridan’s handcrafted twig children’s table and chair set was a natural for the space.  Also in the play area of the children’s room is a large curio cabinet with glass doors and additional drawer storage.

Under the eaves, a solid pine bed with high paneled head and footboards is snug up against the wall. The cozy nook also includes a petit vanity with fluted legs and a cream-colored distressed finish with brown undertones. The accompanying chair is a Hepplewhite wheatsheaf side chair by Jonathan Charles. The bedside Suzette chair was recovered in a woodwork print.

The cute Queen Bee bedside lamp has a crown finial and is from Chelsea House.

A whimsical crown semi-flush ceiling light is the perfect light for the low ceiling  area above the bed, whereas the Gustavian white country chandelier adds charm without overwhelming the play space.
